Study of synthetic protein analogues

Research in the Horne lab is focused on the design, synthesis and study of synthetic analogues of polypeptides and proteins. The cellular machinery underlying life is based on biopolymers (proteins and nucleic acids) comprised of a handful of simple building blocks. Application of the principles of synthetic organic chemistry to the modification of proteins provides an avenue to chemical species that are inspired by nature but manifest new and interesting properties. We are working to develop synthetically modified peptides and proteins as bio-inspired materials, scaffolds for the development of therapeutics that act by blocking protein-protein interactions involved in disease, and probes to study natural biological processes.
