 “Social Medicine Teaching Leadership Group”

In the MBSB program, faculty members are also encouraged to continuously learn the current needs for efficient teaching. One such recent need is a teaching skill by understanding social determinants and structural racism. An MBSB faculty member, Dr. Rieko Ishima, associate professor in the Department of Structural Biology in University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, took an opportunity to attend the “Social Medicine Teaching Leadership Group” class in 2020-2021.  Dr. Ishima commented, “In the graduate program and the research laboratories, there are students and fellows who have diverse backgrounds. Attending the social medicine teaching group was fruitful for me to learn how to teach in general and also to gain information useful to discuss “civil issues in the responsible conduct of research” and “social and environmental impact on research” in the future”.
